Madoff and Jail-Time

Last night I spoke with a reader about this jerk and his 150 year sentence he is up against. What exactly is the point of giving people impossible sentences? I've always wondered about that. Why don't they just say life in prison? Is he suppose to have hope that he'll get out and try his best to stay out of trouble or stay healthy?? Just a snippet....but really, I wonder, do you?
